What is it?
Define Synesthesia: Its a inter-connection, multi-connection in the neurological system, between at least two senses. The stimulation of one Sense or Cognitive pathway will trigger a second Sense or Cognitive pathway. One thing that sets a synesthete apart from a non-synesthete. Is that these connections are made involuntarily. Thus its not a post-process of reasoning or post-analysis, the same as saying that it is not only a cognitive process.
One example is the association of a person’s name with a color. E.g. the name Melissa is purple.
This one in fact is one of the types of synesthesia that doesn’t have a category to fall into yet.
There’s an estimate of 4% of Synesthetes in the world population. But at the same time this number relies on the fact that there hasn’t been that much information about the subject. Plus everyday theres more and more people that realize they have it when comparing they’re way of seeing the world compared to other people.
It is not a disorder or “medical condition”. So theres no reason to be worried. Even though some people with Mirror-Touch Synesthesia have stated that having it can be somewhat painful, people usually tend to find ways of dealing with they’re own specific type of Synesthesia.
